wednesday's dive Empty wednesday's dive

Post  eckart Thu Feb 25, 2010 12:56 am

So I went for another dive on Wednesday at cape point and I was really hoping for some geelbek but alas! nothing! there was still lots of bait fish swiiming around and a few of them looked like they had been nibbled at! I did swim into about 20-25 sleeping Galjoen... some beasts too! they where just lying in this little hollow in the kelp in about 1.5m of water... I watched them for 1 minute before the first one spotted me and started zooming about waking all the others! What a sight... I think this is the only fish that actually know when hunting season opens!!

I've been following the posts about the bait fish. I've been out at the Point just about every day in the last two weeks. Swam out into the birds many times, and sometimes they are realy going balistic. Up to 15-20 big gannets bombing 10 meters around me. Lots of bait fish, but that's it. No tail. No geelbek underneath. First time I've seen that. Really expected to see something more. Some guys have been getting good tail, but not necessarily under the birds where the bait is. Go figure.

Yes, lots of Galjoen all over the place, but rest assured they will scatter at 24:00 on Sunday night.

Maurice,
Good to hear you made it to the birds... must've been a long swim! I've been hoping to get some geelbek for months now! I'm really hoping it'll all work out one of these days! Have you also been diving the SW reefs side? I'm off to Betties for the weekend so I'm planning on getting some crays...

I was talking about the SWR side mainly. The bird action has been pretty constant. The swim's not too bad, provided you dive around the high tide.
