Diving trip to George Empty Diving trip to George

Post  eckart Tue Jan 26, 2010 2:26 am

I was in George for a bit of a long weekend and thought I’d send you a report! We went out Saturday and Sunday launching from the beach at Gerricke’s. went through to the banks and on my first down I swam down behind a poensie of over 10kg’s he was fast out pacing me and gave a slight look over his shoulder and I decided to take the long shot, not the best idea I had but I heard these big boys don’t come in… so I missed! Managed a few parrots and 2 romans for the braai, at one pinnacle I saw a massive red steenbras, biggest reef fish I’ve seen! at the edge of my visibility… it came in cautiously and I was fast running out of time! Took another long shot and missed again then he swam past me with this “what do you think you are doing” look and disappeared. Was amazing seeing two such big fish!
Sunday saw better conditions but didn’t see much big fish although that being said I landed my biggest reef fish, which was the yellow belly. I was swimming down when I saw him pearing out of a cave... I swam down right over him and planted one from the top! Went off to another spot and the action was crazy! Cracker, bellman, bream, spotted grunter… it was on! I managed to land a nice bream and a cracker that was just size but my concentration was gone and I missed atleast 7 shots! I find it really difficult to concentrate on the moment before I pull the trigger, which is really frustrating! But needless to say it was a really special dive in some great conditions!

Swartvlei turnoff. Vaatjie we can go there mater. I have so many marks there quite a few Flippen deep 25+ I'm not fit enough to dive that now other ones between 10 and 17m reachable. You haven't seen structure like that place has mater. Huge mounds that come up from 30m+ to 14m caves pinnacles. There is a very nice poensie area in forest reef. I'll let drop a nice spot for big red stumps right in front of the mouth in 7 m of water it is not always diveable depens on the rain current etc. BUT beware this little patch of reef also attracts some huge whites from time to time. Bringel this is where the shield comes into play now. You see if you know that the area is holding some lunkers you TAKE IT ALONG remember you have but one life and protect it to the best of your ability mate

My matey they are all over the place mostly boat dives. gerickes can be shoredived but the rest is from 800m offshore to over 2 km offshore let me know if you can get boat access otherwise I will organise it. Will PM you some gps coordinates. That other reef can be shoredived but you swim through some serious surf before you get there so hope you're fit mate.
