Powerheads Empty Powerheads

Post  Bear Sat Sep 25, 2010 12:46 pm

Guys, what are your thoughts on powerheads? I dive Cape waters without them, but I think I need to invest in a few to ease my mind. What size do you go for?

I head they were illegal, but you'll be glad that you have one if you ever need it one day!

Hi Guys ,

You are correct , a powerhead is labelled as a weapon , it is an illegal object and the patrol guys get worked up when they find one in your possesion , has happend before.

From what I have read and can gather from the internet, powerheads fall under the same catergory as ammunition, and are considered live ammo. This said, it is not illegal provided you have registered firearms. The reason being is that powerheads are essentially modified bullets or shells. They are mostly home-made by divers, or friend of divers. If there is a registered firearm for which the ammunition was initially intended, then it is not illegal. It is not illegal to carry live ammunition, provided you have a gun licence, and the powerheads is made from a bullet that was bought to be used in a specific, licenced gun.

There are no specific laws regarding the use of powerheads from what I can see, and provided you follow the laws for firearms, a powerhead carried to protect oneself in a dangerous situation is legal. I am open to correction. scratch

To me it seems like a powerhead on the end of a spear could be considered as a weapon so at worst it might get confiscated or something, I think they are beneficial and if you dive open waters a lot, you should get one or try make one. Just try conceal it.

Powerheads Empty Powerheads are ILLEGAL

Post  Jensent Fri Oct 01, 2010 2:02 pm

Hi Guys,

Powerheads are most definitely illegal. If you have a licence for the calibre of ammunition you are carrying in your powerhead, you will escape the charge of illegal possession of ammunition; However, the barrel, even though it has no firing pin, constitutes an illegal firearm, and that is not a charge you want against yourname.

Please be very careful with this. It also bears keeping in mind that if you have a problem with a large angry shark, you will in general not have time to get it onto your spear and use it. Don't get lulled into a false sense of security.

Cheers,

Tony
