Bordtjiesdrif

The is one of the longest stretches of coast for a spearo to explore. The Bortjiesdrif reef starts to the left side of Buffelsbaai reef and extends some way out to sea. The area has large areas of juvenile kelp beds and is very rocky. The gradient of the reef is gradual. Tail come cross the reef now and then, and fish in the 14-15 kg range have been shot there before.
It is also a good place for your roman, galjoen etc. Further down into the bay, large musselcracker of between 10-20m have been speared

Black Rocks

Follow the road from Bortjiesdrif to the car park and then carry on to the end of the road. This whole stretch of coast includes shallow bays and outcrops, all the way north to Hell's gate at Smits. Its a good length of coast to do a long working swim in the shallows(around 10m).
Excellent for galjoen. butterfish, john brown, and some prize red roman.

Batsata Rock

The extensive reef can be seen out in the bay, with it rising clearly out of the water off hell's gate(The rock 700m off the south end of Smits). Although swimmable, there are extremely strong currents. The there is a reef running out, and bank steenbras amongst other fish.
200m on the seaward side of Batsata rock is Deep Batsata. The reef drops off to 30m quickly, which only the experienced should attempt. The drop off is home to some impressive johnnies

Smitswinkelbaai
Probably my favourite section of the penisula from a shore-dive point of view. The area of coast drops off almost immediately into 10m+ water. The are is full of large boulder-type rocks that are riddled with crevices. The are is home to a large population of hottentot and red roman, especially if you swim all the way to the marine reserve border(north). This are is crystal clear when any wind other than a southerly/ south-easter blows. It is also one of the few places that you will get an opportunity to shoot yellowtail off a shore dive(provided you have the guts to swim that far out)

Clovelly

Not the most exciting dive for the seasoned spearo, but non-the-less a good dive for beginners. Start to the furthest right point of KalkBay harbour and swim around to Clovelly Station. The area is rocky and about 10 metres deep. There isnt actually a bad amount of sea life there, and galjoen are frequent. There have been musselcracker speared there, as well as a bank steenbras of 12kgs

Miller's Point

South of the slipway at Miller's is an MPA.
Swim out from the slipway where the water will gradually extend to 10m. Here you have a chance of getting galjoen. Swim further out to the end of the reef, which is at 20m once you reeach between Boat Rock and the last surface boulder(ask the locals). Here is scattered reef with red roma, musselcracker, bank steenbras, and yellowtail beyond the kelp line(in season).
Beyond the kelp line is great white haunt, and there was a fatal attack on a UCT student in 2005 while he and his buddy were spearfishing. He managed to evade the shark twice before is eventually took him. His buddy fired a spear into the great white(in vain), and local fisherman reported seeing a 5 metre beast a few days later, with a spear protruding out its head, with a bouy line trailing behind.

Seal Island

Believe it or not, Seal Island in false bay was a renowned spearo location in the past. However, due to the exponential growth of the great white population due to conservation efforts, Seal Island is suicide to dive nowdays. Seal island has taken more than enough lives, with many of them by sharks, and others through SWBs. Despite its then-fierce reputation, it was used as the venue one year for the South African National Spearfishing Championships. The water is fairly shallow on the Simonstown side, but drops quickly. Although it was and still a dangerous location, it is teaming with fish.
There are so many great whites nowadays. It is the place where many renowned SA spearos have either died, or had a close call in the past.

Cape Peninsula Locations Empty Glen Cairn Quarry

Post  Fishingtaylor01 Tue Oct 19, 2010 12:47 pm

Just thought that this should be added, there is fantastic spearing off the quarry at the right times of the year. You can often sit on the brick wall and watch the tail swim past after a pumping south easter... a good indication is if they are trekking on fishhoek beach. More towards Glen Cairn you can follow the ledges outward where I have seen loads of roman and nice galjoen. I have even bumped into two massive red steenbras there. But be careful here... it is an area frequented by the great whites.

Cape Peninsula Locations Empty Meadows

Post  Fishingtaylor01 Tue Oct 19, 2010 12:52 pm

The area to the South of buffels before Rooikrants is know as Meadows, in the deeper water here there are still some nice holes for bugs and octopus. When the time is right the tail swim just off the back of the kelp. Park at the end of the road and follow the path towards the cliffs, get in at the end and do a drift along the kelp back towards buffels... you may get a pleasant surprise. Also a nice galjoen area.
